Why the gut listens to the brain
Once IBS is the diagnosis, the picture changes. The gut and brain share a two-way line, and in IBS that line runs loud: ordinary gut sensations get processed as pain, and stress turns the volume up further. This is not imagination. It is a sensitised system doing its job too well, and it is the part that gut-directed hypnosis was built for.
How the work goes
Gut-directed hypnosis is a specific, structured approach, not general relaxation. In a focused state, we work with the sensations themselves, calming how urgently the brain reads them, and you leave with recordings to keep using between sessions. It is usually a series of around eight, alongside your medical care rather than instead of it.

Does hypnotherapy help IBS?
Yes. A review of eight randomized trials with 464 patients found relief was more likely with hypnotherapy, relative risk 1.69, which works out at one extra person gaining relief for every five who do the work. European and North American guidelines list it as a second-line option. And n that review, the advantage was still there at long-term follow-up.
